Across the state, there are 9 hospitals offering a Level III NICU and one with a Level II Special Care Nursery at Piedmont Newton. Here in Columbus, the Piedmont Columbus Regional Midtown location provides advanced neonatal services for premature and high-risk infants.
Services
The Piedmont Columbus NICU offers specialized care for babies who are born prematurely or with medical needs. Conveniently located on the same floor as labor and delivery, this setup helps parents remain close to their newborns during recovery.
Babies who need medical interventions are cared for in isolettes to keep them warm while they receive advanced monitoring and treatment. The NICU is staffed by experienced neonatologists, neonatal nurse practitioners, specialized nurses, and respiratory therapists who provide around-the-clock care.
If your baby needs to be transported to the NICU, the hospital has a trained neonatal transport team with a fully equipped vehicle. Piedmont also understands how important early bonding is. They offer skin-to-skin sessions so parents can stay connected to their babies and begin breastfeeding even while their little ones are still in the NICU.
Specialized Care for Moms and Babies
Piedmont Columbus goes above and beyond to make your birth experience as comfortable as possible. The maternity center offers private rooms with a large bed for you and a couch for your support person, giving you both space to rest and recover.
Their team includes maternal-fetal medicine specialists who provide comprehensive care before, during, and after delivery. Expectant parents can schedule consultations for diagnostic services, antepartum testing, perinatal consultations, genetic counseling, diabetes management, and fetal ultrasounds.
Before delivery, Piedmont also offers prenatal classes designed to help you feel confident and prepared for the big day.
A Personal Note from One Mama to Another
When I gave birth to my son, Beckett, at Piedmont Columbus in January 2025, I had such a wonderful experience with the staff and care team. From the moment we arrived, I felt supported, seen, and cared for.
Because I have a history of cholestasis of pregnancy, I was closely monitoring symptoms as I neared my due date. When my hands and feet started itching around 38 weeks, I knew it was time to go to the hospital and I’m so thankful I did. The nurses and doctors listened right away, took my concerns seriously, and made sure both Beckett and I were safe.
While we thankfully didn’t need the NICU, it gave me so much peace of mind knowing it was right down the hall, just in case.
For any parents wondering what to expect during your stay, I was allowed visitors during the day, including my husband, my mom, and our two children. At night, I was allowed one support person to stay, though kids weren’t able to stay overnight. It was the perfect balance of quiet, restful time with the comfort of having family nearby.
If you’re preparing for your delivery, I hope this gives you a little extra reassurance that you and your baby will be in good hands.
