When I became a mother, I heard the phrase, “The days are long, but the years are short” over and over again. I believed it in theory—but once I had my first baby in my arms, I truly understood it. Those first twelve months were a whirlwind of sleepy nights, first giggles, teething, chubby cheeks, and love deeper than I ever thought possible.

As a Columbus, GA newborn photographer, I’ve had the honor of witnessing so many families grow—capturing their little ones as they change in just the blink of an eye. That’s what milestone photography is really about: preserving the story of your baby’s first year in beautiful, tangible memories.

Newborn: A Fleeting Season of Tiny Moments

There is something sacred about the newborn stage. It’s a time of tender, sleepy snuggles, the softest skin, curled-up toes, and peaceful milk-drunk sighs. It’s quiet and slow—until it’s not.

I remember with each of my three babies, there came a moment while I was nursing when I looked down and noticed that their legs no longer curled up into my lap quite the same way. Their tiny feet started to dangle off the edge of my thighs. That moment hit me hard each time. I knew we were leaving an era behind. We were saying goodbye to that sacred stage of newborn-ness and stepping into the world of babyhood.

That’s why I gently encourage families to schedule their newborn sessions within the first two weeks. These early days pass too quickly, and they deserve to be captured with care and love. You will never regret having images of your baby while they’re still so little.

Three Months: Sparkling Eyes and First Smiles

At three months, your baby starts to engage with the world in a brand-new way. They begin to hold eye contact, smile with purpose, and coo at your voice. Their personality is emerging, and so is that heart-melting connection between you and them.

With each of my own babies, I noticed their wake windows starting to stretch out around this time. They were more alert, more interactive. I’d look at them or start talking, and suddenly the biggest smile would light up their face—followed almost instantly by the most serious little expression, like they were contemplating the mysteries of the universe. It was such a sweet mix of baby joy and curiosity.

And then… the teething started. Everything went straight into their mouths—hands, blankets, crunchy books, anything they could get their tiny fingers on. It was messy and wet, yes, but it was also so of wonder. I would often try to picture little teeth in that big gummy smile and it always didn’t seem right, like time was just a little too fast. Didn’t I just have you? How can little teeth already be trying to come through?

This stage is short but oh so sweet. I adore photographing these moments—the gentle expressions, the curious eyes, the early glimpses of who they are becoming. It’s a wonderful milestone to document that often gets missed between newborn and sitting sessions.

Six Months: The Sweet spot of Chubby Cheeks & Sitting Tall

If I had to choose a favorite milestone session, six months might be it. Babies at this stage are so full of joy. They have the most adorable rolls, round bellies, and those perfectly kissable cheeks. They’re often sitting up in that sweet little tripod stance, not quite mobile yet, but proud of their independence.

They’re curious, playful, and absolutely captivating. If your little one isn’t sitting on their own just yet, some parents choose to wait until the 7th or 8th month when sitting is more secure—it makes for such a beautiful and personality-filled session either way.

These images truly reflect the heart of babyhood, and they’re often the ones parents come back to again and again with a smile.

Nine Months: Crawling, Exploring, & Full of Wonder

By nine months, so much has changed. Many babies are crawling, scooting, or even trying to pull themselves up on furniture. They’re becoming more independent, but still need you close by—which means you’re always moving too!

At this stage, all three of my boys were officially on the move—and that meant I was too. Nothing was safe. Everything was new and needed to be explored, touched, tasted, and tested. I remember trying to strike that balance of giving them the freedom to explore, while always staying close enough to gently guide or intervene if needed. It was exhausting at times, but also such a beautiful dance of curiosity and connection.

One of my favorite photos from this stage is of my boys wearing the sweetest little bathrobe. There’s just something about those chubby little thighs and a big, toothy smile after bath time that melts me every time. I’ve made sure to photograph each of my boys in that same bathrobe, and I already know it’s going to be one of those sentimental pieces I’ll never be able to part with. It holds memories, giggles, and the soft, fleeting magic of this tender season of babyhood.

This stage is busy and joyful, full of energy and sweet discoveries. It’s a perfect time to capture your baby’s movement, expressions, and growing personality—before the big first birthday arrives.

One year: A celebration of growth, Love & New beginnings

Reaching the one-year mark is such a meaningful milestone. It’s not just your baby who has grown—you have grown. You’ve navigated your first year as a parent with so much love, strength, and grace. This moment deserves to be celebrated.

Cake smash sessions are a fun and playful way to mark the occasion. Most parents schedule their session about a month before the big ONE so they have images to share with family and friends—and to enjoy on the big day. It also gives you the chance to be in the photo (especially you, Mama!), to relax and simply soak in the joy while I capture the memories for you.

And if cake smashes aren’t your thing? That’s totally okay. Whether your little one has an allergy, or you’re just not quite ready for the sugar rush, a one-year session can be a beautiful way to simply update your family photos and mark the moment with love.

Why Milestone Photography Matters

These sessions aren’t just about documenting your baby’s growth. They’re about creating a visual love story—a way to remember the way they looked at you, the way they laughed with their whole belly, the way your family felt in that exact moment.

As a Columbus, GA photographer, I’ve watched so many parents become emotional during their ordering appointment. It’s powerful to see your own journey reflected back to you in your images—how far you’ve come, how much your little one has grown, and how deep your love has become.

One day, your baby will look back at these photographs and see how loved they’ve always been.
