I get it, I just told you I’m coming to photograph your family inside your actual house, and now you’re mentally calculating whether you have time to repaint the living room, replace your couch, and deep clean every surface before our session.
Take a breath.
Your home doesn’t need a makeover. It just needs a little prep, and I’m going to walk you through exactly what that looks like.
I’ve walked into homes before where a mama had emptied the nursery entirely, everything gone except the crib and a mirror because she was worried it would feel cluttered in photos. And while her heart was absolutely in the right place, the room lost so much of its character. The love she poured into choosing artwork, folding tiny clothes, and making that space feel special for her baby disappeared from the story.
And honestly? That broke my heart a little.
I see this all the time. Families stress so unnecessarily about how to prepare their home for a photo session, worrying about things that truly don’t matter, while the things that do matter are already there.
A sterile, “photo-ready” home might look neat and Pinterest worthy, but a lived-in home tells your family’s real story. And that’s what lifestyle family sessions are all about.
If you’ve been Googling lifestyle family session prep or wondering what to do before your photographer comes to your house, you’re in the right place. Let’s talk about what actually matters and what you can completely let go of.
What I’m Actually Looking For (Hint: It’s Not a Spotless House)
When I walk into your home, the very first thing I notice isn’t your baseboards or whether the throw pillows are perfectly fluffed.
I’m looking at your windows.
I’m paying attention to how the natural light moves through your space, which rooms feel bright and open, and where your family naturally gathers. Light tells me where the magic is going to happen.
There’s a big difference between lived-in and cluttered. Lived-in means your home feels comfortable, personal, and safe—like a place where your kids actually play and your family actually rests. Cluttered is when distractions pull the eye away from connection.
Your home doesn’t need to be perfect. It needs to feel like you.
Some of the most meaningful images come from imperfect spaces—the nursery that isn’t “finished,” the couch everyone piles onto, the bedroom where bedtime stories happen every night. Personality and comfort will always matter more than perfection.
One of the biggest misconceptions families have about in-home family photos is thinking they need to impress me. I promise, you already have.
Chase the Light (And I’ll Show You Where to Find It)
During every lifestyle session, I quietly scout for natural light as we move through your home. Windows, doorways, even the way light bounces off walls, it all matters.
If you want to prep ahead of time, here’s what helps:
Notice which rooms feel brightest during the time of day your session is scheduled
Morning light is often softer and brighter in east-facing rooms
Afternoon light tends to pour beautifully into west-facing spaces
On the day of your session, simply:
Open the blinds and curtains
Turn off overhead lights and lamps
And if you’re thinking, “My house is so dark,” I’ve got you. Truly. I bring professional lighting with me to every in-home session. Flash doesn’t mean harsh, it means I can still create soft, natural-looking images even when natural light is limited.
So please don’t let lighting anxiety steal your peace before I even arrive.
The Quick Declutter That Actually Makes a Difference
I’m a big believer in tidying, not over-staging.
You don’t need to hide every sign of life, but there are a few things that tend to distract in photos:
- Charging cords
- Random cups or water bottles
- Mail piles
- Alarm clocks and electronics on nightstands
- Loose papers on counters
Here’s my favorite trick that I share with my clients:
Grab a laundry basket and walk through your house, tossing in anything you wouldn't want to see in your photos ten years from now. No organizing required. Just move it out of sight.
What should you leave alone?
The things that make your home yours. Books on the nightstand. Your favorite blanket. A few toys that your kids naturally gravitate toward.
My approach is simple: clear the surfaces, keep the soul.
Yes, toys are welcome. Yes, kid stuff is allowed. This is real life after all.
Room-by-Room Prep Made Simple
Living Rooms & Main Spaces
These are often where connection naturally happens. Clear off obvious distractions, tuck away cords, and use that basket method for anything that feels visually noisy.
Bedrooms
Primary bedrooms and kids’ rooms are some of my favorite places to photograph. Don’t stress about perfection. If it helps you breathe easier, smooth the bedding and remove electronics from nightstands but unmade beds with cozy textures are absolutely okay too.
Kitchens
You don’t need a magazine-worthy kitchen. Clear counters of mail and appliances if you can, but leave the heart of the space intact. This is often where kids snack, laugh, and gather.
Nurseries & Playrooms
Please don’t strip these rooms bare. The books, the art, the tiny details - you chose them for a reason. That love deserves to be remembered.
Outdoor Spaces
If we’ll step outside, a quick glance for distracting items is plenty. No landscaping overhaul required.
The Stuff You Can Totally Skip
Let me lovingly free you from a few things:
You don’t need fresh flowers
You don’t need new pillows or decor
You don’t need a deep clean
Photographers truly do not notice most of the things families stress about. Over-staging can actually make your home feel less like your home—and that’s the opposite of what we want.
Yes, you have full permission to leave the toys out.
Yes, you can leave the beds imperfect.
Yes, your home is already enough.
Prepping the Humans (And Pets!) Is Just as Important
Your family’s energy matters far more than how your home looks.
A relaxed morning beats a frantic cleaning spree every single time. Feed the kids. Let them play. Keep things calm and familiar.
Happy kids come from feeling safe and unrushed, not from a spotless house.
For pets, tired dogs are happy dogs. A quick walk beforehand can work wonders.
Lifestyle sessions flow naturally. We move through your space together, following your family’s rhythm. There’s no pressure to perform, just to be.
Your Home Is Exactly Where the Best Photos Happen
Your home, the one where socks get lost, snacks get shared, and life unfolds in the in-between moments is exactly where the most meaningful photos are made.
I love lifestyle photography because I love real life. I love the way homes quietly hold stories —the laughter, the hard days, the seasons you don’t realize you’ll miss until they’re gone. And your story, just as it looks right now, is worthy of being remembered.
So take a deep breath. Let go of perfection. Trust the process. You don’t need to change a thing about your home to make it beautiful or meaningful, it already is.
And if you find yourself wanting to preserve this season for your family here in Columbus, GA, I’d be so honored to help you tell that story.
