I’m so excited to share something new here on the blog, my very first local small business spotlight! As a motherhood and family photographer in Columbus, I’ve been dreaming of creating a space that goes beyond photos, one that also connects moms with the resources and support they need.

Part of what inspired me to start this series is my own journey with breastfeeding. When I was pregnant with my first, my doctor mentioned I could see a lactation consultant if I wanted extra help. I brushed it off, thinking, “Why would I need that? Breastfeeding is natural, it’ll just come easy.” But my thoughts couldn’t have been more wrong. Breastfeeding turned out to be one of the hardest—and most rewarding—things I’ve ever done.

I’ll never forget sitting on the bed, crying to my mom after learning my son hadn’t gained back his birth weight, feeling like a failure. She reminded me that breastfeeding is hard and not something people always talk about, you often hear the positive stories, but not the struggles. That day, I turned to YouTube for help and tried new holds, but what really changed things was meeting with a lactation consultant. She watched me feed, offered a few practical tips, and those small changes made all the difference. From there, my son’s weight started climbing, and we went on to have a beautiful 18 months of breastfeeding together.

That experience showed me just how important it is to have support and guidance from professionals who truly understand what mothers are going through. My hope is that by spotlighting local businesses like Birth and Baby of Columbus, new and experienced moms alike can discover resources, encouragement, and the reminder that they are not alone on this journey.

Today’s interview is with Katherine Maxey, the owner and founder of Birth and Baby of Columbus! You can find her office in midtown Columbus at 1329 Wynnton Road, Columbus, Georgia 31906.

Birth and Baby of Columbus | Columbus, GA Lactation Consultant

1. Tell me about your business! What services or resources do you provide?

Katherine offers such a beautiful range of support for mothers at every stage of their breastfeeding journey. For expectant moms, she provides prenatal consultations that focus on preparing for success—from understanding milk production and learning different latch and positioning techniques, to recognizing hunger cues, navigating common challenges, and even covering the ins and outs of pumping and milk storage. Once baby arrives, her postpartum consultations give mothers a safe space to work through things like latch pain, supply concerns, creating feeding plans, and even preparing for the transition of returning to work. She also leads a weekly support group that is completely free, open to anyone breastfeeding, and requires no registration—just a welcoming place to come as you are. Beyond individual support, Katherine is deeply connected in the community, collaborating with local pediatricians, dentists, chiropractors, mental health specialists, doulas, OBGYN’s and pelvic floor physical therapists so that families receive well-rounded, holistic care.

2. What makes Birth and Baby of Columbus unique and special?

This answer lies with Katherine herself:

“Watching a mother persevere through challenges and reach the goals she set for herself. I love being the one who gets to listen and support families through a vulnerable and sacred time.”

Katherine’s care is truly unique because she walks alongside families every step of the way. She stays in close communication after visits—through text or phone—so moms never feel alone. Her approach is laid back, judgment-free, and always focused on helping families create feeding plans that work for them. With more than 20 years of nursing experience spanning ER, trauma, labor and delivery, and pediatrics, Katherine brings a wealth of knowledge that shapes her guidance in a thoughtful, practical, and compassionate way.

3.What was the inspiration behind Birth and Baby of Columbus?

Katherine’s inspiration for opening Birth and Baby of Columbus came straight from her own motherhood journey. When she had her first child, breastfeeding was filled with challenges and ultimately her breastfeeding journey ended earlier than she had hoped. That experience planted a seed—she wanted to become the kind of support she wished she’d had in those early days. Now, she pours that heart into offering encouragement, advice, and confidence to other mothers walking their own breastfeeding path. With her deep passion for women’s health and education, this work is truly a beautiful marriage of her personal story and her calling to serve.

4.What's your absolute favorite part of your job? What gets you most excited about your work?

When I asked Katherine about her favorite part of the work she does, her answer came quickly and straight from the heart. “Watching a mother persevere through challenges and reach the goals she set for herself. I love being the one who gets to listen and support families through a vulnerable and sacred time.”

5.Which of your services are you most passionate about or proud of? Why?

“Breastfeeding is often like a puzzle with many pieces.”

When it comes to her work, Katherine is especially passionate about looking at the big picture of infant feeding—not just the baby’s needs, but how the entire family is impacted. She has a tender heart for mothers’ mental health, especially in the postpartum season, and she loves being able to support women in ways that nurture both their emotional and physical well-being. Katherine also finds joy in working through challenging feeding issues, the kind that require her to think creatively and look at every angle. To her, breastfeeding is often like a puzzle with many pieces, and she treasures the opportunity to help families put those pieces together in a way that feels right for them.

6.What is the number one piece of advice you would pass along to new moms?

Katherine’s number one piece of advice for new moms is to seek out breastfeeding education before your little one arrives if feeding that way is your goal. She reminds us that even a little bit of education can make such a difference—especially when it comes to setting realistic expectations for those tender first weeks at home with your newborn.
