Bringing a new life into the world is one of the most beautiful experiences—and it deserves to be celebrated! As a Columbus, GA maternity photographer, I’ve had the joy of capturing countless mamas in this season of transformation and anticipation. Whether you’re newly pregnant or already planning your baby shower, now is the perfect time to start thinking about maternity photos. Here are five important questions to ask before booking your maternity session to make sure it’s everything you’ve dreamed of—and more.

When Should I Book My Maternity Photographer?

It’s never too early to start planning! Most photographers (myself included!) recommend booking at the beginning of your second trimester. This gives you time to secure a spot on your photographer’s calendar and start preparing for the session.

The session itself typically takes place between 28 and 32 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round but you’re still feeling comfortable and able to move around easily.

How Do I Choose the Right Photographer for Me?

Choosing a photographer is about more than just liking their photos—it’s about connection and comfort. Look through their portfolio and see if their style matches what you envision: is it light and airy, moody and dramatic, or somewhere in between?

Also, read reviews and browse their website or social media to get a feel for their personality and process. Do they make you feel seen, celebrated, and taken care of? That’s who you want by your side for this special session!

And here’s something else to consider—are you looking for more than just digital images? Many photographers (myself included!) offer gorgeous, tangible artwork like framed prints, heirloom albums, or wall galleries that you can enjoy every single day. While digital files are wonderful, there's something incredibly meaningful about holding your photos in your hands or seeing them displayed in your home. It’s a way to honor this chapter in your life and create a legacy your little one can grow up seeing, too.

What Should I Wear? Is a Client Closet Available?

This is one of the most common questions I get—and I love being able to say yes, I do offer a curated client closet with a selection of beautiful, flattering dresses for mamas to wear during their session. From flowy gowns to intimate lace robes, there’s something for everyone, and it’s one less thing for you to worry about!

If you're working with another photographer, ask if they offer wardrobe assistance or styling tips. It makes a big difference in how confident and beautiful you’ll feel on the day of your shoot.

Do I Want a Studio Session or an Outdoor Location?

This one depends on your personality and the look you're going for. Some mamas love the clean, cozy, and minimalist vibes of a studio session—it’s a controlled environment with perfect lighting and a quiet, calm energy.

Others might prefer the golden glow of sunset in a field or a dreamy woodland scene for outdoor maternity photos. Think about what feels like you and ask your photographer what options they offer.

Who Will Be in the Photos With Me?

Will it be a solo session focused entirely on you and your beautiful bump? Or do you want to include your husband, older children, or even your pets? Knowing this ahead of time helps with styling and scheduling.

Family-inclusive sessions are so special—your photos will capture not just your pregnancy, but the love and anticipation that surrounds your newest little family member. Let your photographer know who you’re planning to include so they can help you coordinate everything.
